Moving Tips

Moving can be exciting and stressful at the same time. Here are some helpful tips you should consider before moving into your new home.

Use our guide below to help you through all the steps:

  • Choose a professional mover to assist you with the relocation of your household. It is important to select a company you can trust, licensed and insured. The movers entrusted with the care of your goods must be well trained, courteous and efficient.
  • Reserve the dates for your move as soon as you make the decision. Ideally, between two weeks to one month in advance.
  • Consult with one of our Moving Coordinators - your concerns and special requests are considered an opportunity to apply our experience to finding a solution for your move!
  • Clean out closets, attic, basement, sell or donate the items you are not planning to take.
  • Essential items should be set aside for your trip and for the first day at your new location. Children's toys, clothing, snacks, bedding, etc. You may decide to take these items with you or you may request that these boxes be placed in the truck at the end.
  • Set aside cleaning supplies for the day before you move.
  • Your moving company cannot transport hazardous materials, flammables, ammunition or explosives. Check if household cleaners, pest control and other supplies can be transported.
  • Make a list of everyone that needs to be notified of your change of address.
  • Schedule the transfer or connection of utilities at your new location ahead of time.
  • Cancel services at your current location, such as lawn/pool maintenance, pest control, cleaning, etc.

Quick Tips for an Easy Move

  1. Try to start packing 3 to 4 weeks before your move.
  2. Begin packing the things you use least, such as books, seasonal clothing or sports equipment, and artwork & collectibles..
  3. Double-bag any items that may soften in the heat, such as candles, soaps, etc.
  4. Use the opportunity to organize and get rid of outdated items you don't use.
  5. Use strong cardboard boxes-small boxes for heavier items, large boxes for lighter items. Avoid over packing.
  6. Buy more packing tape than you think you will need, you'll most likely end up using it.
  7. Lay your books flat in their box, alternating bindings so they stack evenly.
  8. To stay neat, concentrate on packing one room at a time, stacking finished boxes in a corner against the wall.
  9. Print out labels indicating each box's destination room, and attach to each completed box. This will save unpacking time, and creates a record of the boxes that you moved.
  10. Keep a complete inventory list of everything to be moved. Jot down serial numbers on all electronic equipment.
  11. Make copies of important documents such as wills, contracts, and passports.
  12. Pack alarm clocks, medication, valuables, passports, and urgent items in a separate, clearly marked box or bag.
  13. Wrap nuts and bolts in clearly labeled plastic bags and keep them with your 'urgent' items.
  14. Empty dressers completely (furniture tends to break more easily if not emptied first).
  15. Flammables like aerosol cans, paints, or gasoline must be carefully disposed beforehand.
  16. Transport perishables like frozen foods, produce, or plants on your own.
  17. Soaps, sprays, polishes, and medicine should not be placed in the same box as food.
  18. Heavy items should not be packed with dishware.
